Shopping in Marrakech - Marrakech

Traditional Markets in the Medina

Starting in the main square, Jemaa el Fna, head North and you will find yourself on an adventure through the winding alleys that make up the souks. This is the very crowded, and very traditional market in the centre of Marrakech. You can bargain and pick up nearly every item you could possibly think of here. The souks play a big part in the daily routine of the locals as they pick up everything they need for their meals that day. Here you can browse the many stalls selling crafts, jewellery, herbs, spices, souvenirs, and so much more. Be prepared to negotiate and haggle to pick yourself up a bargain.

Shops and Malls in the Guéliz

Situated outside the city walls, Guéliz is the “western style” city centre of Marrakech. Many fashion, food, furniture and decoration shops as well as malls have popped up in recent years. There are plenty of restaurants in this area to choose from as well. Guéliz is great for walking around, drinking a coffee, or just buying a newspaper. In Guéliz and in the supermarkets you will find wine and alcohol to buy etc.

Industrial Quarter - Sidi Ghanem

If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city’s souks, you can head to the industrial zone of Marrakech known as Sidi Ghanem. This area is where you will find the city’s factories and is around 20 minutes from downtown Marrakech. In recent years, the area has boomed as both local and foreign designers have moved their studios and shops here so not only will you be able to purchase the latest fashion and other goods, but you may even get to meet the designers. There is plenty of choice here as the shops range with a vast number of products from chic candles to modern pottery, luxury linen to vintage furs.

Opening Hours

In the Medina, business hours tend to be from 10am - 7pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. On Friday the hours are 9am - 12pm and then from 4pm - 7pm. In the Guéliz area, shops are open from 9am - 12:30pm and then from 3:30pm - 7pm, Monday to Saturday. However, some shops may be closed on a Friday.
