Itinerary and tips for a dream stay in Sri Lanka

In the Indian Ocean and to the south of India lies a country with many landscapes, Sri Lanka. When you arrive, you will be surprised by the diversity of the territory, which ranges from lush green rainforests to superb Buddhist palaces and the skyscrapers of the city centre. A trip to Sri Lanka is the promise of an unforgettable stay where you will be able to discover a culture of Asia that inherits the Buddhist religion. A place where 70% of the population practices this religion, which offers the country a rich and interesting cultural heritage. Villanovo has created an itinerary in Sri Lanka as well as some practical information that will be useful if you are planning a trip.

When do I go?

When do I go?

Situated near the equator, Sri Lanka offers a warm and even humid climate during the rainy season. In the south, during the monsoon period which takes place from May to August, the country is dominated by heavy temperatures and many episodes of heavy rain, this period is called the "great monsoon". From November to February, the "small monsoon" occurs further east in Sri Lanka. During this period the temperatures are warm but not very stable. Temperatures are generally pleasant throughout the year and hover around 20 and 30°C. However, it is highly recommended that you pack rain gear for you and your family in your suitcase!

Approaching elephants in Sri Lanka

Approaching elephants in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a fresh and green landscape in which many wild animals live, some of which are easily approachable! Visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage to see elephants (of which had a turbulent past). The orphanage took in its first 5 elephant calves and has been raising others since that day. Due to the poor elephant-human relationship in the country, the presence of this orphanage is necessary for the survival of the species. The rules in Pinnawala are very strict and respect for nature and animals is the priority.

Located in the east of the country, the orphanage is an hour and a half drive from Kaleliya. For a more unusual experience such as a safari, head to Udawalawe National Park.

What you must see in Sri Lanka

What you must see in Sri Lanka

Don't be fooled by Sri Lanka's small size, as this country of only 65,000 square metres has an incredible cultural wealth that will leave you in awe. Villanovo offers you luxurious and comfortable villas in the south and east of the country, yet Sri Lanka's wealth extends throughout the country, so you should consider renting a car for more mobility and freedom during your stay!

The Golden Temple of Dambulla is a must if you want to discover Sri Lanka and its remains. When you arrive in front of it, you will be able to observe a building overhung by a gigantic golden statue of a deity of the Buddhist religion. Underneath this temple are 5 shrines which preserve more than 150 representations of Buddha. You can visit these 5 sanctuaries in 1h to 1h30 without a guide. The golden temple of Dambulla is one of the most popular tourist attractions for travellers who are curious to discover the 5 mysterious caves located in Dambulla, a small province in the heart of the country.

Another must-see site in Sri Lanka is Adam's Peak. This 2,246-meter high peak is considered holy by Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims. Located in the southwest of the country, in the month of April, the mountain welcomes pilgrims who climb the thousands of steps that lead to its summit. At the top of the mountain, one can observe a hole in the rock, this hole is interpreted differently according to the various religions but, for each of them, it represents a trace of steps belonging to Adam, Buddha or the Hindu god Vishnu.

As you leave to observe Adam's Peak, you will be in awe of Sri Lanka's lush green nature, for another magnificent discovery, set off on the famous tea route
