Weather and climate in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is an ideal destination for a relaxing family holiday as the country enjoys a heavenly climate all year round. When the rainy season arrives in the east, it generally does very well in the west and vice versa.

Weather and climate in Sri Lanka - Sri Lanka

December to March

This period corresponds to the monsoon on the Northeastern part of the country, it means that in the Western part there is plenty of sunshine, which happens to be an area rich in paradisiac beaches.

So prefer this part of the country if you decide to fly to Sri Lanka during this period. If you visit the country in January, you will have the chance to attend the Duruthu Perahera festival, organised during the full moon. It celebrates the first of Buddha's three visits to Sri Lanka.

May to September

During these few months, we observe the opposite phenomenon because the monsoon falls on the Southwest part, so it is advisable to visit the Eastern part of Sri Lanka which benefits from high plateaus that will protect you from the rains and will allow you to benefit from the sublime sun paradise.

The North of the island enjoys dry and sunny weather all year round.

What to wear in Sri Lanka

Prepare your summer clothes because the temperatures are high on this charming island. Depending on where you are staying and the time period, you may want to have a few waterproof clothes, as during the monsoon season, small refreshing rains can sweep across the island, but overall the weather is still good in this country.

For cultural visits to Buddhist temples in particular, consider wearing light but covering clothes in order to respect local politeness rules.
