Emerald rice fields, temples from another time, a cosmopolitan ethnic culture… Bali is undoubtedly a dream destination. The Indonesian archipelago is a corner of paradise like a jewel in the middle of the Indian Ocean. Between tradition and modernity, Bali will offer you an unforgettable trip with family or friends. Here are 10 things to do during your stay in Bali.
If the rest of the Indonesian archipelago is predominantly Muslim, Bali is known as a Hindu island. That's why you will find no less than 10,000 sacred temples. In particular, do not miss the Ulun Danu temple on Lake Bratan, which is undoubtedly the symbol of this island of Indonesia. Continue your spiritual tour through to the Uluwatu Temple in South Bali. Built on top of a cliff, this divine temple overlooks the Indian Ocean. We also advise making a detour to the temple of Tirta Empul, one of the most authentic of the island. Here, everything seems frozen in time in the middle of a hot spring in which the locals come to bathe to purify themselves. While you’re here, visit its neighbour, the Gunung Kawi Temple. This one surprises through its dozens of sanctuaries that are dug directly into the rock.
Bali is a great destination if you are keen on water sports. Thanks to its myriad of heavenly beaches, you can practice surfing during your stay. To do this, we recommend the beautiful Kuta Beach. Even if this beach is very busy in high season, it is still ideal for trying surfing. Whether you are a beginner or more experienced, you will be lulled by the waves of the Indian Ocean. On the huge white sand beach, there are also several surf schools that offer introductory classes. Perfect for learning and progress! Back on the mainland, at the end of the day, stop for a moment on Kuta Beach to admire a beautiful sunset.
Located in the centre of Bali, Ubud is a timeless place to rest after the excitement of the island. Surrounded by rice fields, tropical jungles and Hindu temples, this authentic place invites serenity. Here you will be in the heart of Balinese culture. If you visit Bali with your children, we recommend the Monkey Forest, a sanctuary with three ancient temples and hundreds of monkeys! Take a stroll through the colourful markets of Ubud to discover the authentic side of Bali. In the heart of lush vegetation, Ubud will offer a wild getaway to all nature lovers.
At an altitude of 1700 metres, Mount Batur is an active volcano located in the North of the island. If you like to keep fit during your holidays, the ascent of Mount Batur is for you! We advise organising the Mount Batur hike in the middle of the night to be able to contemplate the beauty of the sunrise at the top. From above, you will be rewarded with a breathtaking view. Don’t worry, there is no need to be an expert to make this hike. A basic physical fitness (and courage to get up in the middle of the night) will suffice! This activity will introduce you to new horizons and offer you a unique setting in the world.
In the north of Bali, head to Lovina beach. A quiet, idyllic corner that is perfect for an unforgettable family holiday, it is renowned for being a volcanic sand beach. Here, the sand is dark and mysterious. Much less crowded than Kuta, Lovina is perfect if you want to try unusual activities. Among them, we recommend observing the dolphins of Bali. Colourful fishing boats full of charm will take you to admire these magnificent marine creatures. Wildlife lovers can even swim with dolphins. More than an activity, this is an extraordinary experience you will not soon forget!
Like a pearl of coral in the middle of the Indian Ocean, the island of Bali is a paradise for all lovers of water sports. In particular, the island abounds with privileged spots to practice scuba diving. For beginners, we recommend heading to the beautiful seaside resort of Amed, on the east of the island, which enjoys an extraordinary seabed. The more experienced can explore around the idyllic beaches of Nusa Penida or Candidasa. Be careful though, the currents here are rather strong. Diving should therefore be practiced with caution.
During your stay in Bali, you will surely have the opportunity to discover local crafts of incredible wealth. In particular, you can peruse the different art shops of Bali, where all kinds of products are to be found, and cheaply. In addition, if you have the chance to visit Bali in June or July, you can attend the Bali Arts Festival. This festival celebrates local crafts with a background of folklore. For the occasion, cultural performances are organised around the island.
Bali is famous for its enchanting emerald green rice fields. During your stay on this idyllic island, organise a walk with family or friends on these plots of land where rice is grown. For example, we recommend stopping in the rice fields of Tegalalang, north of Ubud. You will see very hospitable peasants plowing the rice. Continue your ride out of time to the village of Pupuan, where there are probably the most beautiful rice fields in all of Bali. Unknown to tourists, this village is a little corner of paradise and a cultural place of cocoa and various fruits. You can discover these rice paddies along winding paths, preserved in an exceptional natural scenery. Finally, do not miss the UNESCO World Heritage Jatiluwih Rice Fields, which offer breathtaking panoramic views of centuries-old terraces.
To end the day, treat yourself to a relaxing moment with a traditional Balinese massage. In spas in Bali, masseuses offer to reconnect your body and soul using various essential oils. This massage, both gentle and invigorating, will give you all the energy you need to continue pacing up and down the island. Inspired by Ayurveda, Balinese massages will surely enchant you!
Like the ethnic mosaic of the island, Balinese gastronomy is colourful, exotic and varied. For all lovers of good food, we recommend trying the island specialties during your stay. In particular, you can try Urab, a mixture of coconut, various vegetables and delicately spiced beans. Do not miss the Nasi Goreng, a dish made of rice, onions, vegetables, meat or shrimp. And for dessert, order Dadar Gulung, thick pancakes with coconut. A true delight!
