Ibiza has long been associated with the party crowd, and while peak season certainly sees more than its fair share of hedonists and ravers thronging to its mythical clubs, outside of the summer and away from the main strips, a wonderfully laid-back and family friendly ambience pervades.
Boho-chic yoga studios, rustic street markets and beatific beach clubs, where the island's hippie counterculture spirit infuses all it touches can be found around the rugged hills of its inland, and scattered about the intimate calas (coves) and secluded beaches of its quieter shores, especially in the north.
The famous markets of Las Dalias and Punta Arabí are sure to provide plenty to keep curious minds - both old and young - entertained, while the quieter coves of the north and east provide shallow spots for less confident swimmers. In a natural cave in the southwest of the island, kids can take in the sea life at the aquarium at Cap Blanc. Ibiza provides as good a place as any to sample the nutritional delights of the Mediterranean diet, with plenty of traditional beach restaurants scattered about the island, serving up first-class local Balearic cuisine.
Among our favourite dishes you can find Trempo, a typical Balearic dish, consisting solely of seasonal vegetables (red and green peppers, tomatoes, onions) that come directly from local farms. Meanwhile, coca de Trempo, a kind of pizza on which the vegetables of the original salad are placed, is a local favourite and can be found in every bakery on the archipelago. Another local delicacy, Bullit de Peix is the island's famous fish stew and should definitely be sampled when visiting, as indeed should much of the island's seafood. For those with a sweet tooth, don't leave Ibiza without trying the famous Flaó, Ibiza’s take on the traditional cheesecake, and orelletes, a type of fried doughnut.
Of course, Ibiza is a cosmopolitan place, playing host to a wide variety of restaurants, serving everything from local favourites to sushi, curry, and even fish and chips! In short, you won't go hungry on a visit to Ibiza.
Among our favourite restaurants to visit when in Ibiza, you'll find the exclusive inland delight of Casa Maca - although getting a table is sometimes easier said than done - the beautifully rustic Casa Jondal, and the breathtaking panoramic setting of Edén at the Hacienda Na Xamena hotel. Those staying around Ibiza Old Town may also wish to try the Michelin-starred delights on offer at the impressive La Gaia, while Oleoteca Ses Escoles on the north of the island is a great place to sample the island's famous olive oil. Fans of traditional Spanish cuisine in a rustic setting should also consider Cala Jondal's Yemanja Beach Restaurant for first-class cuisine set in a child-friendly atmosphere.
